Text & Captions

Add text elements and AI-powered captions to annotate and enhance your recordings.

Text Overlays

Create text overlays that appear at specific points in your timeline. Text overlays are great for titles, callouts, annotations, step numbers, and any on-screen information.

Adding Text

Open the Caption tab and add a new text segment. Each text segment has a start and end time on the timeline, controlling when it appears and disappears.

Text Styling

Customize every aspect of your text overlays:

  • Content — Full text editing with multiline support
  • Font family — Choose from built-in fonts or system fonts
  • Font size — Dynamically calculated based on video resolution (12–256px)
  • Font weight — Normal or bold
  • Text color — Any hex color
  • Text alignment — Left, center, or right

Background

Add a background behind your text for better readability:

  • Background color — Any color with adjustable opacity (RGBA)
  • Background padding — 0–32px
  • Border radius — 0–32px for rounded corners

Position

Use the 9-point layout picker to place text in any position:

Top LeftTop CenterTop Right
Middle LeftMiddle CenterMiddle Right
Bottom LeftBottom CenterBottom Right

Transitions

Animate how text appears and disappears:

  • Entry animations — Fade, slide, bounce, and more
  • Exit animations — Independent from entry animations
  • Duration — 0.1s to 1.0s for each

Batch Editing

Select multiple text segments to apply the same style (font, color, size, background) to all of them at once.

AI Captions (Speech-to-Text)

Recorded integrates Whisper speech-to-text to automatically generate captions from your microphone audio.

Generating Captions

  1. Open the Caption tab in the editor
  2. Choose a Whisper model:
    • Fast — Quicker processing, good accuracy for clear speech
    • Accurate — Slower processing, better accuracy for complex audio
  3. If the model isn’t installed yet, click to download it (this only needs to be done once)
  4. Click generate — Recorded analyzes your microphone audio and creates time-mapped caption segments

Editing Captions

After generation, review and edit the captions before applying them:

  • Fix any transcription errors
  • Adjust timing if needed
  • Remove filler words or unnecessary segments

Applying Captions

Once you’re satisfied with the captions, apply them to add them as text segments on the timeline. They will appear as styled subtitles synchronized with your speech.
