FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Recorded.
Is Recorded free?
Yes, Recorded is free to use with some limitations. Free users can record, edit, and export videos up to 25 seconds long, with a Recorded watermark on the export. All editing features (zoom, cursor customization, backgrounds, webcam, text, captions, speed control, motion blur, background music) are available on both Free and Pro plans. Upgrading to Pro removes the duration limit and watermark, and increases the cloud sharing quota.
What platforms are supported?
Recorded is available for:
- macOS 12.0 (Monterey) or later — Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) and Intel
- Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) — x86_64 processors
Where are my recordings saved?
By default, recordings are saved to:
- macOS:
~/Movies/Recorded/Recordings/ - Windows:
Videos\Recorded\Recordings\
Each recording is stored in its own folder, named with the date, time, and captured window name. The folder contains the video file, audio tracks, metadata, and editor project data.
Can I record system audio?
Yes, Recorded captures system audio on both platforms:
- macOS: Uses ScreenCaptureKit (requires Screen Recording permission)
- Windows: Uses WASAPI loopback (no special configuration needed)
Both microphone and system audio can be captured simultaneously and are recorded as separate tracks, so you can adjust their volumes independently in the editor.
What export formats are available?
Recorded supports three export formats:
- MP4 (H.264) — The default, widely compatible format with quality presets for YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn
- GIF — Animated GIF at 640px width, 10 FPS, no audio
- MOV (ProRes 422 HQ) — Professional lossless format for further editing in external tools
Does Recorded support hardware acceleration?
Yes. Recorded automatically uses GPU hardware encoding when available:
- macOS: Apple VideoToolbox
- Windows: NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, or AMD AMF (in priority order)
- Falls back to software encoding if no compatible GPU is found
Can I add captions to my recordings?
Yes. Recorded includes AI-powered speech-to-text using Whisper. It can generate captions from your microphone audio and add them as styled text segments on the timeline. You can also add manual text overlays.
How many languages does Recorded support?
14 languages: English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese.
Can I use Recorded on multiple devices?
Yes, depending on your license type. Standard Pro subscriptions are linked to your account. Coupon-based licenses may have device limits — you can manage registered devices in the account settings.
