Frame rate gets all the attention, but dimensions decide whether your viewers can actually read the screen. A recording at the wrong resolution looks soft no matter how good your content is, and a recording at the wrong aspect ratio arrives on the platform wrapped in black bars.
These are two separate decisions, and it helps to keep them separate.
Two Different Questions
- Resolution is how many pixels the video contains — 1920×1080, 2560×1440, 3840×2160. It controls detail and sharpness.
- Aspect ratio is the shape of the frame — 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3. It controls how the video fits its destination.
You can have a razor-sharp 4K video in the wrong shape, or a perfectly shaped video that is too soft to read. Get both right and the video simply looks correct everywhere.
Why 1080p Is Usually the Right Answer
1920×1080 remains the safest default for screen recordings, and not because it is a compromise.
At 1080p:
- Text in most applications stays legible at full-screen playback
- File sizes stay reasonable for email, chat, and internal wikis
- Encoding is fast and rarely drops frames, even on modest hardware
- Every player, platform, and embed handles it without re-encoding surprises
For tutorials, support replies, bug reports, standup updates, and documentation, 1080p is not a downgrade. It is the resolution most of your viewers will watch at anyway.
When 4K Actually Earns Its Cost
Recording at 3840×2160 quadruples your pixel count. That is worth paying for in a few specific cases:
- Dense interfaces such as IDEs, timelines, spreadsheets, and design tools with small type
- Footage you plan to crop or zoom into during editing — extra pixels give you room to punch in without softening
- Marketing videos for landing pages and product launches, where quality is part of the message
- Archival recordings you expect to re-edit and repurpose for years
The tradeoffs are real: larger files, slower exports, more heat, and a higher chance of dropped frames. If your machine struggles, a stable 1080p recording beats a stuttering 4K one every time.
The Retina and HiDPI Trap
This is the detail that surprises people most.
On a Retina Mac or a Windows machine with display scaling enabled, your screen reports a logical size — say 1512×982 — while the panel actually contains twice as many pixels. Recording captures the physical pixels, so a “1512-wide” window can produce a 3024-wide file.
Two practical consequences:
- Your files may be much larger than expected. A full-screen recording on a 5K display is a 5K recording, with all the encoding load that implies.
- Downscaling on export is usually a gain, not a loss. Exporting that 3024-wide capture to 1080p produces exceptionally crisp text, because the encoder has more source detail than it needs.
If files feel oversized, record a window or a selected area instead of the whole display. Fewer pixels per frame is the single most effective way to lighten the load.
Choosing an Aspect Ratio
16:9 is the default for a reason. YouTube, embedded players, presentation screens, and desktop monitors are all built around it. Unless you have a specific reason to deviate, stay here.
9:16 (vertical) is for phone-first destinations: Shorts, Reels, TikTok, and stories. A desktop screen recording does not crop cleanly to vertical, so plan for it — record a narrow window, or use the editor to frame a single column of the interface rather than squeezing a wide desktop into a tall frame.
1:1 (square) works well for social feeds where the video autoplays inline and needs to occupy space without demanding a full-screen tap.
4:3 is worth remembering for older projectors, some conference room displays, and archival material that was captured that way.
Recording Frame vs Export Frame
You do not have to record in your final shape. In Recorded, you can capture a window or area at whatever dimensions make sense for the content, then set the output frame in the editor and use background and padding to fill the space around it.
This is the cleanest path to vertical and square video: capture the interface at its natural size, place it inside the target frame, and let the background do the work. The alternative — cropping a wide desktop down to 9:16 — throws away most of what you recorded.
The Readability Test
Resolution decisions are easy to overthink. There is a faster check.
Record 20 seconds, export it at your intended settings, and watch it on a phone. If you can read the interface text, your settings are right. If you cannot, you have three fixes, in order of effectiveness:
- Zoom in on what matters with the editor’s zoom effects, instead of showing the entire screen
- Increase the application’s font size before recording — many editors, browsers, and terminals allow this
- Raise the resolution — the last resort, not the first
Most “blurry recording” problems are framing problems. A 4K capture of a full 32-inch display still has unreadable text on a phone.

Never Upscale
Resolution can always go down cleanly and never goes up. Exporting a 1080p recording at 4K produces a 4K-sized file with 1080p detail — the same picture, four times the storage.
If a project might need 4K later, record it in 4K now. Otherwise record at 1080p and enjoy the faster exports.

- Do I know where this video will be published?
- Is 1080p enough, or does the content genuinely need 4K?
- Am I capturing a window or area instead of a whole high-density display?
- Is the application’s text large enough to read when scaled down?
- Does my target aspect ratio match the destination platform?

Start at 1080p and 16:9. Move to 4K when the interface is dense or you plan to crop, and change aspect ratio only when the destination demands it. Then run the 20-second phone test — it will tell you more about your settings than any specification table.
