Recording a mobile app on the phone itself sounds simple until you try it. The built-in recorder catches notification banners, your battery indicator drifts, the file lands on the device instead of your editing machine, and you have no way to add zooms or callouts afterward.
Mirroring your phone to your desktop and capturing it there solves all of that at once. You get a stable, high-resolution source, full desktop editing power, and files that are already where you need them. Here’s how to set it up on both macOS and Windows.

iPhone or iPad on macOS
The most reliable route needs no extra software:
- Connect the device with a USB cable and tap Trust This Computer
- Open QuickTime Player and choose File → New Movie Recording
- Click the arrow next to the record button and select your device as the camera source
- Leave QuickTime in preview mode — you never press its record button
QuickTime becomes a live, lag-free mirror window. Recorded then captures that window.
iPhone or iPad on Windows
Windows has no native iOS mirror, so use an AirPlay receiver application. Once your device appears via Screen Mirroring in Control Center, the receiver’s window behaves like any other app window and can be captured directly.
Android on macOS or Windows
scrcpy is the standard tool on both platforms. Enable Developer options → USB debugging on the phone, connect it, and launch scrcpy. It renders a crisp, low-latency mirror window with no ads or watermarks. Windows users can also use Phone Link for supported devices, though frame rates are typically lower.
Preparing the Device
Mirroring is only half the job. A distracting phone ruins an otherwise perfect capture:
- Enable Do Not Disturb so no messages appear mid-demo
- Charge above 80% — a red battery icon reads as carelessness on screen
- Clean the status bar: full signal, Wi-Fi on, no VPN or alarm badges
- Use demo data: realistic names and content, never personal information
- Lock orientation so the layout can’t rotate unexpectedly
- Set brightness high to avoid dim, washed-out mirrored frames
- Disable auto-lock so the screen never sleeps mid-take
Capturing With Recorded
Once the mirror window is on screen, the workflow is the same on both platforms:
- Choose Window capture and select the QuickTime, AirPlay receiver, or scrcpy window
- Set frame rate to 60fps — mobile UIs are animation-heavy and 30fps looks choppy
- Enable microphone if you’re narrating live, or leave it off to record voiceover later
- Enable system audio only if the app produces meaningful sound
- Press record, wait two seconds, then begin interacting
Window capture is better than area capture here: if you nudge the mirror window mid-session, the capture follows it instead of losing the frame.
Interaction Technique
Touch gestures don’t translate to a visible cursor, so viewers can’t see what you tapped. Compensate deliberately:
- Slow down every gesture by roughly a third compared to normal use
- Pause before each tap so viewers can anticipate where the action happens
- Scroll in short, steady drags rather than fast flicks that blur past content
- Hold on results for two seconds before moving to the next step
- Avoid rapid back-and-forth navigation — it makes demos hard to follow
Editing the Result
The desktop editor is where a mirrored capture becomes a polished demo.
Zoom effects replace the missing cursor. Zoom to 2x just before a tap and hold briefly so the interaction is unmistakable. Keep transitions around 300–400ms.
Text overlays name the gesture the viewer can’t see: “Swipe to archive”, “Long-press for options”, “Pull down to refresh”. Keep them under five words.
Backgrounds turn a narrow vertical frame into a full-width video. A subtle gradient behind the phone frame fills the empty space on either side rather than leaving black bars.
Trimming removes the inevitable dead time — app launches, loading spinners, and the moment you reach for the phone before each take.
Export Settings
Match the export to where the video will live:
- Social and in-app: 1080×1920 vertical MP4, H.264, 30fps
- Website embeds: 1920×1080 landscape with the phone centered on a background
- Documentation GIFs: trim to under 15 seconds and export at reduced resolution
- Store previews: follow each store’s specific resolution and duration limits
If you plan to use one recording in several places, export the landscape version first and crop vertical variants from it.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Capturing the whole screen instead of the mirror window. You end up with your desktop wallpaper and menu bar around the phone.
Recording at the mirror window’s small default size. Resize the window as large as your display allows before recording — you can always scale down later, but you can’t add pixels back.
Forgetting the connection cable is visible. If you’re also filming physical hands, route the cable out of frame.
Leaving a notification permission prompt in the take. Trigger and dismiss all first-run dialogs before you press record.
Ignoring the phone’s own animations. Reduced-motion accessibility settings can make a demo feel flat — leave standard animations on.
